Health Care Management
Mass., US health care topic of Harwich forum

A forum on the 2006 Massachusetts Health Reform Law and universal health care in Massachusetts and the nation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon April 12 at the Harwich Community Center, 100 Oak St.

The forum, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Cape Cod, will feature Alan Sager, professor of Health Policy and Management at the Boston University School of Public Health. Sager, an authority on health policy and management, will talk about the financial viability of the Massachusetts plan.

The state's subsidized coverage ran $146 million over budget in 2007 and is projected to increase to as much as $400 million in 2008. Sager will also talk about a potential national universal health care plan.

The forum is open to all and includes coffee before the forum at 9:30 a.m.

Crisis flew over health board's head

As the crisis grew over flawed breast cancer tests in 2005, behind the scenes officials with the Newfoundland Department of Health were pressing the health authority at the centre of the controversy for answers.

As Joan Dawe, head of Eastern Heath's board, took the stand for the second day in a row yesterday at a public commission's inquiry into the flawed tests, onlookers again heard how correspondence between concerned officials went behind her back.

The commission heard how on Nov. 3, 2005, Assistant Deputy Health Minister Moira Hennessey emailed then-CEO of Eastern Health George Tilley saying the minister was looking for an update on whether patients who had received faulty test results had been contacted.
